Year 2000

Hysteria or hype?

The past few years have brought on a plethora of issues surrounding the impending arrival of the next millennium.

Whether you think the millennium arrives on January 1, 2000 or in 2001, computers are definitely of the impression that 2000 is the point of concern.

Why: Computers store dates as either 2 digit (99 for 1999) or 4 digit (1999) numbers. If you do any work that involves dates you'll need to verify whether your software and hardware work with 2 or 4 digit years.

Hardware:

As a rule of thumb Macintosh systems are Year2000 compliant at the hardware level.

x286, x386 and x486 and processors are not Year2000 compliant at the hardware level.

Pentium systems are mostly hardware compliant except for some of the first generation Pentium processors.

Operating Systems:

Again, Macintosh OS is compliant.

Windows 95 is not fully compliant.

Windows 98 is not fully compliant (Patches are out and more are coming out to bring it into compliance)

Software:

Now there's a can of worms!

Answer: it depends.

Questions to ask yourself:

Is your hardware going to rollover to 2000 or 1900?

Is your OS ready for the millennium?

Do you have any programs that make use of calculations involving dates?

Are you going to be enjoying yourself at your New Year's Eve party or will you be in the office pulling your hair out?

DaVex Consulting is uniquely qualified to go through these questions with you and to work to resolve these concerns for you. If you have any questions regarding the Year 2000 and any potential problems please contact us.
