So you want a website.

For someone to access your webpages they need to reside on a computer which is directly connected to the Internet and running appropriate software for hosting websites. Starting from the low end and moving up the cost and performance here are a few of the available solutions.

How do I do it?

Solution 1: With both Macintosh computers and Windows 98 PCs you can configure the basic machine to dole out webpages when connected to the Internet or an internal network. This is a usable method as long as you have low bandwidth needs and aren't necessarily concerned about having 100% availability of your site. For this all you need is the most basic of Internet connections and a computer you can use to serve the pages from. The drawbacks of this method are extensive. You can't tell people to just come to www.mycompany.com, you need to give them an IP address to enter in. This comes in the form of 192.68.72.211. And that assumes that your ISP allows you to have a static IP. If they don't you'll need to give a different address to potential visitors every time you log into the Internet This would be a fine solution for an internal network which doesn't have high demands on it.

Solution 2: Bring the whole shebang in-house!

The benefits of this solution are that you have immediate access to and full control of the hardware. The drawbacks to this are that you do need a permanent highspeed connection and the maintenance is all dependent on your enterprise. Additionally when new hardware and standards are rolled out it will incur additional costs in purchases and manpower to implement them.
